First scented variety of Phalaenopsis Orchid

The new variety of Phalaenopsis ‘Liodoro’ is cultivated as a compact pot plant with a flower spike that reaches a height of 35-45cm. The red and purple-green speckled flowers emit an attractive sweet fragrance. The flower size is 6-6.5cm, slightly small for cultivated varieties and the leaves are pale green. The breeder/grower is developing the series name ‘Aromy Stars’ under which these plants can be identified.

In interior conditions plants should flower for at least 3 months with proper care.

The most popular colors in the sales at the Dutch auctions: white, yellow, pink, purple.

Plants of Phalaenopsis should be handled with care and the period of transport should be as short as possible. The minimum temperature during transport should be 15°C. Plants need to be kept moderately moist and protected from drafts. Flowers are especially sensitive to mechanical damage. During storage the outer sleeve is removed and the plants maintained at a temperature of 15-18°C. They are regularly watered but any excess water is drawn away. The same tips should be followed at retail. In addition the application of appropriate nutrients will improve the life expectancy of plants. To avoid bud-drop plants should not be kept too long in conditions of low light.

To re-flower the plants, they should be placed in a cooler position and watered only sparingly. Once the buds begin to show, regular watering can then recommence. The root-ball should be kept moist throughout the development of the flower buds but plants should never be allowed to stand in water. Plants should develop new flower spikes two or three times a year. For further specific information: Flower Council of Holland. E-mail: info@flowercouncil.org, www.flowercouncil.org
