New Italian Limonium varieties

In recent years Italian plant breeders have been introducing some very good new Limonium hybrids. The ‘Joy®’ series by Giovanni Gaudio represents a notable improvement in Limonium sinuatum www.limongaudio.it Limonium is a very suitable crop for southern Italy and Mediterranean climate in general.

An interesting range of new genetic material in Limonium was on display at Flora 2005 exhibition, Ercolano Flower Market, Naples, by Az. Agr. Meristema Srl. The process of interspecific and intraspecific hybridization and clonal selection is yielding many inteesting lines. Breeding objectives of the Company include high productivity at lower temperatures in order to allow the production season (spring to summer) to be lengthened. This not only helps reduce production costs for growers but the early and later crops should comand higher market prices. Dr. Maurizio Antonetti, head of research, also emphasised the importance of long rigid flower stems and strong colours. The series names Eva® and Adamo® are amongst the names registered and Eva® and Lavender Adamo® hold EU plant variety rights. The flowers of Eva® Gold are a very strong yellow and in Lavendar Adamo® an intense blue. Az. Agr. Meristema are also known for their breeding of Gypsophila and Solidago. For further information.
