Netherlands: Garden Trends 2010 influenced by financial crisis

The garden industry can look forward to a good 2010, as consumers are indicated to spend more money to bring ‘cosiness’ around the house. Trends have always been influenced by economical, environmental and political tendencies. For 2010, trend watcher Ms. Aafje Nijman predicts imagination, creativity, romance and intimacy will become keywords to inspire garden designers and hobby gardeners.

“Garden suppliers have little to fear of the recession when offering contemporary products and good communication,” Ms. Nijman says. “Contemporary is a sign of optimism, which translates into bright colours.” The urge to distinguish oneself from others will become a hot issue, which offers opportunities for niche products.

In the process of developing new products, nature is the greatest source of inspiration. Furniture, pots and other decorative products will have a more natural and more traditional look. Designers will try to pour tradition and authenticity into a contemporary style. Ms. Nijman indicates three distinct style trends in 2010: the classic ‘Exuberant romantic garden’, the imaginative ‘Bohemian spirit garden’ and the status sensitive ‘Closed transparent garden’.
