ECOguard™ is a new powerful bio-pesticide which utilises natural extracts from 'food grade' garlic to combat a wide range of agricultural and horticultural pests and diseases. The liquid and solid formulations leave no residues or taints and are totally compatible with IPM systems. The extract has a powerful ovicidal and larvacidal effect on a range of pests including free-living nematode worms. Early studies have produced highly encouraging results for the control of cabbage root fly, beet army worm, western flower thrip, red spider mite. The effects of using a range of application rates of ECOguard™ on all life stages of Bemesia tabaci at the John Innes Research Centre, UK have revealed a repellancy effect and a high level of kill when the product was sprayed directly onto adults. This effect was not evident on the larval stages. Very positive results in controlling greenhouse whitefly Trialeurodes vaporariorum have been reported by growers and the product should help control the whitefly problems within southern Europe, particularly in areas where insecticide resistance levels are high and whitefly-transmitted viruses are present. ECOguard™ is currently being registered with the PSD in the UK. AlphaGalileo, University of Newcastle.
