Report 'Gardening in the Global Greenhouse'

This is the title of a 140p report on practical impacts of climate change on gardens in the UK (useful for other countries too) by Richard Bisgrove and Professor Paul Hadley of Reading University. It is a review of the existing literature and uses expert judgement to provide an overview of the best current information available. It also identifies key information gaps in assessing the impacts on gardening, heritage gardens and commercial horticulture, and defines a future research agenda. In other words what the changes are likely to occur and how the garden industry will need to respond to the difficulties and new opportunites. In the RHS summary gardeners are advised as follows: Make long-term plantings of trees, shrubs and hedges that are drought tolerant. Plant long-term shelter to protect the garden from stormy weather. Improve soil with gravel and organic matter to sensure drainage and nutrients (additional drainage may be installed before planting long-term plants). Build water collection and disposal measures into new hard landscaping, greenhouses and sheds. In vest in water features and ponds that will benefit wildlife and will be appreciated in hotter, drier summers. www.ukcip.org.uk click on 'gardens' and 'key findings'.
