The varieties are ‘Moon Shadow’, ‘Moon Lite’, ‘Moon Shade’ and ‘Moon Vista’ varying in colour from mauve to blue/violet. The intensity of the colour improves as the plants age. The blue pigment delphinidin has been introduced into these varieties through gene technology by Florigene Pty Ltd, Melbourne, Australia. The flowers are of excellent quality with a vase life of around 16 days. Greenworld E-mail: glenvale@glenv.com.au 51) Twelve Pack Trials in 5 days! Steve Neill at the University of the West of England-Bristol, United Kingdom, has discovered that the hormone acts by encouraging the cells that surround the stomata to manufacture nitric oxide that in turn triggers the closure of the stomata. The exact same result is obtained using Viagra. In humans the ‘extra’ dose of nitric oxide relaxes the muscles of blood vessels. The discovery could allow plant breeders to engineer drought resistant plants and the chemical industry could create sprays that stimulate plants to shut down their stomata during periods of drought. Plant Physiology Vol 128, P13. 53) Compalox-P buffer technique Experiments with 20 widely different plant species at genetic and ecological levels, have shown that by reducing the Phosphorus availability by 10-20 times, using a P-buffer technique, regulates growth by enhancing root growth in relation to shoot growth and improves keeping quality of flowering plants by delaying floral senescence. Results of trials of Compalox-P in Poinsettia production have already been described in previous Clamer Informa News. In some plants this buffer technique will substitute completely the use of growth regulating chemicals while in others it will drastically reduce their requirement. The technique is patented and the product is in its final phase of testing with scientists, advisory services and growers in Denmark, UK, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Norway and the USA after which time the product will
