A straw-based mulch, called Strulch, has been developed by Dr Geoff Whiteley at Leeds University, England. The mulch is made from shredded straw treated with iron minerals which turn it brown and slow the rate of decomposition. It lasts for up to two years, is effective in weed control, reduces the need for watering in the garden and is a deterrent against slugs and snails. All mulches reduce evaporation and hinder weed growth. Strulch is stable against decomposition and is visually acceptable. The product is ideal for use in many areas of the garden such as perennial beds and vegetable plots. Strulch is environmentally-friendly being made from locally produced wheat straw rather than chipped bark and other imported mulch products. It is already being used by the Eden Project, and the Royal Horticultural Society Harlow Carr Gardens. "AlphaGalileo". Available from Strulch Ltd in large compressed bales for professional use and smaller packs for retail. Fax 0044 1943 863610 E-mail: info@strulch.co.uk www.strulch.co.uk |
