The Canadian Company Planteck Biotechnologies (L'Assomption, QC), has succeeded to propagate Peonies in vitro. Previous attempts failed because during the weaning stage the young plantlets usually succumb to fungal diseases after planting in compost. While success provides the means to reduce propagations costs, the Company intends to focus its micropropagation on rare varieties or much sought after varieties that demand high prices (often USD 50 and above per plant). There are many interesting varieties in the Company's on-line catalogue. The plants on offer have been micropropagated and acclimatized to soil. They will be from the first year of growth, supplied bare-root from March-April and/or September-November. ordinarily these plants will flower only after the 3rd year of growth in soil.
