The book entitled “Greenhouse horticulture in China: Situation and Prospects”by. Costa, JM, Heuvelink E, Botden (Eds), 2004, has been realized by the Horticultural Production Chains Group, Wageningen University, The Netherlands. ISBN 90-6754-744-1, 140 pp. The book contains an up-to-date and extensive study on greenhouse horticulture in China focusing at five different regions: Beijing, Shanghai, Yunnan, Shandong and Jiangsu. The book combines a literature study with data and impressions collected during a 3-week study trip by 6 researchers from the Horticultural Production Chains group, Wageningen University in October 2003. Several Chinese Universities, Institutes and Dutch diplomatic representations in China helped with the organisation of the visit. Several private partners from the greenhouse sector supported the visit. The book provides information on the most relevant historic and political aspects that influenced greenhouse horticulture in China. Data on vegetable and ornamental production, greenhouses, substrates, environment, seed industry, market and supply chain and R&D are presented and discussed. The Strengths and Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) for the greenhouse horticulture for each region and conclusions on the future prospects are discussed.
