Promoting new varieties of outdoor plants

Ivano Garbuio, Italian agent for UK based Genesis Corporate Marketing Consultancy (marketing new plants worldwide) is working with the McSinergie Company. New varieties are propagated in Italy under contract to McSinergie and offered by way of a type of franchising agreement to garden centres under the trademark Raraplanta® together with standard modular display units. As a result, Italian consumers have access to a much wider range of new varities and amatuer plant breeders in Italy will be able to submit new plants to the Genesis organization for introduction and marketing worldwide.

The Four Oaks award for the best new nursery-stock plant was awarded to Genesis’s Berberis x ‘Starburst bred in the UK by Steve Yandall. It has striking marbled leaves green, cream and pink. In cold temperatures the marbling assumes a dominantly red pattern. This could be a very useful new introduction for Nursery-stock growers in Italy.

The positive features of Lonicera japonica ‘Sweet Isabel’ is that it is very floriferous developing flowers over a long section of the new stems rather than just the apical zone. This variety also flowers over a long period.

The ‘YouMe® series of Hydrangea macrophylla from Japan were voted the best new plant at the Plantarium exhibition. Selected from crosses made between a very old Japanese variety and H. macrophylla over several generations. The Japanese breeder is an Associate of the Genesis group. Plants are very compact, floriferous with unique double flowers and available in several colours.

Buddliea ‘Silver Anniversary’ is a compact variety with grey/variegated leaves producing white flowers with a blue eye.
