Glyroxyl®: a new disinfecting agent under trial

A very interesting new disinfectant that all growers, packers and distributors should keep their eye on is called Glyroxyl® registered as a decontamination agent in February 2004. The beauty of this so-called water peroxide is that it breaks down slowly to H2O and O2 and is therefore environmentally clean and non-toxic. The product has also been accepted as a preservative in fresh fruit and vegetables. It should prove particularly useful as a treatment of flowerbulbs prior to transport and prior to planting. The product competes with Chlorine and should score highly in MPS schemes. It is ideal for disinfecting surfaces in greenhouses and substrates and in the sterilization of water collection and circulation systems. It might prove a worthy substitute for methyl bromide. For agriculture and horticulture the product is sold under the names Boxyl and Multi Resistent.
