Disinfecting soils for Lilium production

The disinfection of soil is a topical argument. The IBC (Inrternational Bulb Council), Hillegom, Holland recommends certain products for use on soils prior to planting with Lilium flowerbulbs. Tolclofos-methyl is efficient against Rhizoctonia solani that attacts the developing buds in the soil. 5-10g/mq of the commercially availably product (50% active ingredient) is mixed in with the top 10cm of the soil. Pythium attacks the roots that develop in the first 20cm of soil. This layer of soil is treated with 20-30g/mq of 80% fosetyl-aluminium or alternatively 1,5g/mq of 35% matalaxyl or 5-10% of 35% etridiazol or 4-8g/mq of furulaxyl or 10-15 ml of 66,5% propamocarb. For each of these substances, two dose rates are indicated; the lower rate if the soil is sandy the higher rate for heavier clay soils. Fosetyl-aluminium is only for use on heavier clay soils because in sandy soils it washes away rapidly but can also be applied in overhead spray irrigation after planting the bulbs. Plant roots suffer and are more susceptible to Phythium in badly draining soils with an excess of water and lack of oxygen. “Colture Protette” 9 2004 Fax 051 6575856, E-mail: cp@gce.itEnglish
