Seed-propagated F1 Hybrid Plumbago ‘Escapade’ is easy to grow. It produces plants which are more compact and branching than vegetatively propagated plants. This PanAmericam series contains a blue and a white flowered variety which perform well in conditions of high temperature, high and low soil moisture. ‘Escapade’ White grow 30-40cm tall and 55-65cm wide in northern gardens while the Blue variety grows 35-45cm tall with a spread of 45-50cm. The blue variety is said to have a deeper colour than other blue-flowered varieties of Plumbago. In frost free areas ‘Escapade’ varieties work well in mixed containers and for informal hedges 1.2-1.8m tall with a slightly larger spread. As pot plants they are best grown in 20-25cm diameter pots for sale to the consumer. In cooler climates ‘Escapade’ is best grown in the greenhouse and set out as a patio container plant in late spring.
When sown in January, ‘Escapade’ will flower in May under natural days. For autumn flowering the plants may need long-day treatment after 1st of September. Plumbago is a heavy feeder and irrigation should ensure that there is no build up of salts (from fertilizers). To obtain well-shaped bushier forms, plants are first pinched when they have developed 15 leaves. One or two pinches can be made. A hard pinch will delay flowering by about 2 weeks. Spray using a growth regulator one week before pinching will produce a bushier more compact plant. Plumbago does best in full sun. They are moderately drought tolerant and grow vigorously during hot weather. Fax 001 630 231 3609 www.PanAmSeed.com |
