Fusarium infection of Gerbera

Researchers at the University of Torino have signalled the infection by Fusarium oxysporum of Gerbera plants grown in soilless cultivation. Infected plants show a slow deterioration and weakening of the leaves. Initially this can be unilateral accompanied by more widespread chlorosis that causes the infected leaves to dry-up. These symptoms can be confused with infection by Pythium cryptogea although in this case disease symptoms express thenselves much more quickly. What is clearly related to Fusarium oxysporum attack is the browning of the valcular tissue, especially evident in the crown of the plant and sometimes on the leaves. Infection of Gerbera by Fusarium oxysporum is of particular concern for soilless cultivation in closed or open irrigation systems. Infection will not necessarily lead to the death of the plant but it will significantly reduce plant development and productivity. Giovanni Minuti “Colture Protette” Fax 051 6575856 E-mail: cp@gce.it
