New hydro-capillarry pot system for layering | |
The Rooterpot consists of a container that hinges open to fit around the stem of a plant that is being layered. A ‘cylinder of bark is cut away from the stem and the Rooterpot is then shut tight and secured by two quick fasteners. Roots develop from the upper layer where the bark has been cut. The 15cm and 25cm diameter Rooterpots (height of 30cm) have alettes that hold the stem on closing. The base holds two reservoirs for water retention covered by two lids that facilitate the ingress of water and its ascent by capillary action through the soil. The soil is thereby maintained permanently moist creating the optimum saturated habitat. The heat build up inside the Rooterpot also favours root development. The wall of the pot contains six capillary channels that facilitate the ascent of water via surface tension as well as helping roots to a geotropic growing pattern to avoid spiral growth. Lasty, there are four locks with holes in the lid of the pot in case it is necessary to straighten the positioning of the stem by tying in to the main trunk stake. This system can be used to layer plants and the Rooterpot can be opened at any time to inspect the progress without damaging the developing roots. In the latest design, the Rooterpot is made in transparent material with an opaque cover-label that can be partially removed to inspect the progress of rooting.
