The All-American Selection Council for Hemerocallis (AADSC) has awarded the varieties ‘Red Volunteer’ and ‘Miss Mary Mary’ with the All-America title for the best new introductions for 2005. These two varieties join a list of just ten varieties that have been award ed the All-American title since the trial program was started in 1985. ‘Red Volunteer’ produces large 17cm flowers on tall 70-80cm stems. The velvety crimson flowers are very striking. The scapes are strong, very well branches and produce plentiful blooms. It is a rust resistant variety that flowers mid-season for 6-8 weeks. ‘Miss Mary Mary’ has a repeat blooming habit like the well known variety ‘Stella de Oro’’ from which it is derived. However, ‘Miss Mary Mary’ is more heat tolerant and rust resistant; good news for Italian growers and landscapers. It flowers very early in the season with single petalled, small, gold blooms on 30-40cm stems. The double flowers start appearing in increasing numbers on repeat flowering scapes throughout the summer until the first frosts. It is a a wonderfully compact border plant, ideal for landscaping use. It has grassy winter dormant foliage.
