This technology employs an underground network of sturdy flexible black tubing to conduct precise quantities of water directly to the plant roots, exactly where it is needed. Extensive trialing by the Agriculture Research Service (USDA) on the cultivation of tomaties, cotton and corn, has demonstrated that this form of irrigation can provide higher yields using less water. Fertilizers can also be added to the irrigation water. The precision with which plants can be irrigataed also reduces the risk of run-off of excess water and fertilizers which can pollute acquifers. In keeping the surface of the soil dry, there is less risk from diseases that thrive in the moist surface layer of the soil. For furher information: www.ars.usda.gov |
