The first variety of Hydrangea macrophylla to develop flower buds on the current- season wood so as to flower in the same season has been introduced by Bailey Nurseries in Minnesota. Named ‘Endless Summer’ (Bailmer), is a very hardy variety with dark green mildew resistant leaves. It is a breakthrough in Hydrangeas, because of its ability to flower on new or the current season's wood or growth. The result is a plant that provides beautiful flowers all summer long, rather than in just one flush, a marked improvement over normal macrophylla varieties. The flowers grow up to 8" in diameter with pink blooms in alkaline soils and blue blooms in acidic soils. This plant is very forgiving of harsh treatment. Whether the plant dies back to the crown (due to hard frost) or a gardener trims at the wrong time, the plant will still produce a wonderful display of flowers during that growing season. Grows to around 1.5m tall by 1.8m wide, as for normal Hydrangeas. The variety prefers a sunny or slightly shaded position and can be successfully grown as a container plant.
