Good returns on bulb speculation

Some seven years ago, the UK seed Company Thompson & Morgan Ltd took the risk of buying the entire stock (just 3 bulbs for the price of €215.000) of a new black (extremely deep purple) flowered variety of Hyacinth produced in Holland as the result of 16 years of breeding and selection. After seven years of propagation, initially in-vitro followed by conventional propagation techniques, Thompson & Morgan estimates an availability of 25.000 – 30.000 bulbs for sale as of September 2005 at a price of €11 each. The new variety is named ‘Midnight Mystique’ and is said to be the world’s first black Hyacinth bred from un-named blue and pure white varieties. The fragrant flowers will grow to 20-25cm tall.
