Fleuroselect Congress, Sorrento, Italy | |
Joel Goldsmith was elected the new chairman of Fleuroselect effective from the 1st January 2006. He is the second non-European to lead this originally European organisation. Mr. Goldsmith wishes to interpret the ambitions of the organization for developing into ‘the international organisation of the ornamental plants industry’. He also takes the view that there is a role for Fleuroselect as a major source of information with regard to ornamental plant cultivation. Recent monitoring by the organization of licence obligations for protected varieties concerned about forty businesses in the Netherlands, Germany, France and Italy. No major violations of the licence right were observed. The Business Unit is preparing two propositions. Licences signed by companies with authorise Fleuroselect to act immediately on their behalf in cases of breach of the breeder’s rights. Secondly, a fund will be raised to finance the fees of a solicitor to prepare court cases the moment that a violation is uncovered. Since the foundation of Fleuroselect, members are bound by an agreement to respect and safeguard one another’s varieties. This ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ between breeders initially covered the seed sector but has now been extended to include vegetatively propagated material. Fleuroselect also mediates in cases where varieties are marketed under a different name or as being of different origin.
