| Of particular significance to growers of young plants is ‘Pit Pot’ from Potgrond Italia Srl. This product consists of pre-formed cubes of various dimensions made of peat combined with a special pre-polymer that gives the substance a rubbery feel. The material was initially developed by NASA for producing plants in space station biospheres. The substance is extremely porous (2-5 times that of compressed peat) and quickly takes up water when dry. It does not flake and it maintains its shape. Rooting is accelerated and no stagnant water forms at the base of the cubes. Smaller cubes (and therefore a greater number of plants) can be rooted in the same area/tray.
