New photoselective additive for plastic film

Ciba Speciality Chemicals claim that productivity in cut-rosae production can be increased by 10% and for premium-quality roses (70cm stems) by 57% by utilizing greenhouse film that contains the new photoselective additive Ciba® Smartlight® RL 1000.

Trials were conducted in an area of 2.100m2 in the 7ha flower farm of Rosas Flamingo in Brazil. The trial area growing the rise variety Vegas was covered with 150micro single layer polyethylene film containing Ciba® Smartlight® RL 1000. Data gathering started in August 2003, measuring aspects such as plant quality, productivity, nutrition, pests or disease. The data was compared with results obtained using ordinary film.

During the first months of the test, a substantial increase in leaf volume, in stem length and in bud size was noticed without having modified the nutritional and other growing conditions. Other positive characteristics stimulated by using the film additive were stem length and an absence of blackening of flower petals. Even during the hottest periods, flower quality was maintained at a very high level. There was no appreciable difference in the incidence of pests and diseases.
