Moisture sensor saves irrigation water

A Flormart award (September 2005 edition) was won by the Nelson Company for its moisture sensor that is placed under turf. The instrument is first calibrated to the water holding capacity of the ground and the level of moisture desired. The sensor, connected to a time-based controller, will provide a continuous reading of the ground moisture level and permit watering only when the humidity level has fallen below the desired level. This useful instrument enables great savings to be made on the use of irrigation water (the Company claims as much as 40%). It will not only save water and the cost of irrigation water but also reduce the weakening effect that too much water will have on plant growth and development.
