New Lathyrus varieties | |
‘Misty Purper’ is the latest addition to the relatively new ‘Misty’ varieties of Lathyrus odoratus characterized by a contemporary two-tone colour (a background colour carrying a striped, speckled or hazed contrast). The petals of ‘Misty Purper’ show bright purple stripes against a pure white background and the margins are also strongly sinuate or serrated. Like all Sweet Peas, the flowers have a pleasant fragrance. ‘Misty Purper’ joins nine other colour combinations in the ‘Misty’series; Apricot, Blue, Lavendel, Lilac, Maroon, Porcelain, Red, Salmon and White. Lathyrus odoratus is a member of the Fabaceae family and originated in the Mediterranean. The ideal storage temperature of this flower is 10°C. The use of a flower gel (flower transport gel) keeps flowers in good condition over long transport distances without the need to keep the flowers on water. The gel also permits the flowers to be transported horizontally thus saving on space. On arrival at the retailer, the stems should be cut at a slant and placed on clean fresh water as soon as possible. Once removed from the cold store it is best to keep the flowers on display until sold. Lathyrus is sensitive to ethylene gas that shortens their vase life. It is also a very popular flower for small mixed bouquets or for use on its own in a vase. For more information: www.flowercouncil.org |
