Big step forward in transporting flowers ‘on-water’

The ‘Porto’ moisture holding reservoir from Pagter ensures that cut flowers can be transported ‘on water’ in a horizontal position. This innovation was launched at IFEX 2005 exhibition in Japan and nominated for an innovation award at Hortifair 2005. The system adds cost to packaging but adds a premium to the flowers provided that the flowers are of a high uniform quality to begin with. The reservoir comes in 3 sizes with water-holding capacity of 80, 160 and 400ml. This provides choice in terms of how many stems of what varieties are packed in a given bunch. The water absorbing material resembles flakes of papier-mâché but consist of a plastic polymer. The upper ring of the reservoir grips the flower stems when inserted and there is no ‘free water’ to leek out when the reservoir is placed hortizontally (or up-side-down). The absorbant medium provides a constant supply of water to the flowers over a period of 2 days at 30°C or longer at 2-5°C. The plastic reservoir is non returnable and is recycled as plastic. With the stapling of a special fixing device the ‘Porto’ system can be used with existing flower boxes. A special ‘Porto shipping box’ is availabel for the Porto 20 (stem length 50-60cm) and Porto 50 (70-80cm). The system is also indicated for prestige flower bunches sold by mail order or on-line.
