G. de Koning BV, Westland, Netherlands, has obtained the exclusive right to use a new patented dye on ornamental flowers and plants. After white or very pale-coloured flowers are treated with the dye they are exposed to daylight or "black light” to charge the dye. The treated flowers subsequently glow in the dark for some time and are marked under the brand name ‘Glowing Flowers’. The treatment has no effect on the vase-life of flowers. Under ordinary conditions of daylight it is not possible to identify treatement from untreated flowers, thus the importance of labelling. So far the rose varieties ‘Sofie’ and ‘Avalanche’ have been treated with this dye at the Trendyroses Nursery, De Lier. At the Personality Nursery, Monster, the white Chrysanthemum variety ‘Anastasia’ has been similarly treated. Both these products were recently launched at the Naaldwijk clock auction. ‘Glowing Flowers’ are expected to find an interesting niche market especially in Southern and Eastern Europe.
