New varieties of Princess Lilies®

Royal van Zanten has introduced 3 new varieties to the Princess Lilies® series of Alstroemeria (see “Clamer Informa” for past article). This brings the total number of varieties in the series to 22. Fabiana® (zaprifabi) is unusual in having white margins on the leaves although the flower colour is a rather weak cream-yellow. Mary® produces large 6-7cm flowers of a strong yellow-gold colour. Theresa® (zapriteres) has flowers of a rich pink with deeper pink toward the centre with yellow markings. A very attractive colour.

Princess Lilies® are pot Alstroemerias. This exclusive series is propagated using a technique which ensures the plants never grow taller than 40 cm. The plants are ‘self-cleaning’ since the finished flowers fall naturally from the plant. New flower stems continually develop from the underground rhizome and few other garden plants flower for such a lengthy period, from spring to the first frosts.

The cultivation period in the greenhouse varies from 10 –20 weeks according to variety, season and climate. Plants are ready for sale once the buds begin to acquire colour. Most sales are made via garden centres, where the plants possess excellent shelf life. Apart from slugs, virtually no other pests threaten this unique class of plants which as bedding plants and perennials are establishing a unique and increasingly popular position.
