‘Infiniti’ Scarlet is one of a new series of Pelargonium hortorum variety bred by Floranova Ltd in the UK that has won a Flueroselect Gold medal 2007. The scarlet flowered variety is said to be exceptionally early flowering (production time of 95 days) and produces large flowers (3-4cm). This latter characteristic has always been a negative feature of seed-raised varieties in comparison to vegetatively propagated varieties. ‘Infiniti’ Scarlet will go some way to closing this gap. The variety also continues to flower over a long season. It has good all round performance in packs and in the garden. Current seed raised varieties can be divided into two groups; one includes varieties that are very early that produce compact plants with relatively small flowers and flower heads with excellent pack performance. The second group is more vigorous with larger flowers and flowerheads that have excellent garden performance and are generally sold as flowering pot plants in the spring. ‘Infiniti’ Scarlet combines the best of both groups. It grows to a height of 30cm with a spread of 25cm with an upright form with round variegated leaves. Other colours are available in the ‘Infiniti’ series; Salmon, Pink and White and the breeders are working to introduce more colours. In Floranova’s well known ‘Horizon’ series of Pelargonium, ‘Red-Ice’, ‘Orange-Ice’ and ‘Blueberry Crush’ are new itroductions. Seed of the ‘Infiniti’ series will be available sarting in the spring of 2006.
