More Flowers from India

The Flora Expo 2006 took place at Pragati Maiden, New Dehli, India, 8-10 September 2006. It is organized by Media Today Pvt. Ltd (also a PR Company and publisher of the trade magazine “Floriculture Today”. The event is sponsored by APEDA (Agricultural & Processed Food Products Exports Development Authority), with the support of the NHB (National Horticulture Board) and the Ministry of Agriculture. While the event is essentially aimed at the professional sector, the opinion of one eminent trade visitor to the 1° edition last year calls for some caution until further evidence of the exhibitors profile and the conference programs are available. It also appears that the public has access to the show.

The event’s official website describes the visitor profile as including: flower trading and processing, technical and scientific interest, growers and breeders, wholesale and retail, landscape management. It states that buyers will attend from India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Gulf States and other Arab countries. A series of international workshops are planned to include greenhouse management and marketing.

Floriculture exports from India are growing rapidly reaching €34.890.900 in 2004-05. The Indian government is supporting a series of important initiatives amongst which is the establishment of 6 agri-export zones across five States - Tamil Nadu, Uttaranchal, Karnataka, Sikkim, Maharashtra which will eventually be integrated with cold chains for perishables. India has the advantage of good climatic condition and inexpensive labour, but infrastructure, maintaining quality standards, marketing and R&D are areas that need more attention. The high rate of economic development, especially in the service industries, should also permit a rapid development in the consumption of flowers and ornamental plants in India, although the export trade is being given the absolute priority.
