New foliage and form

A continuing trend toward sculptural foliage plants was seen at Flormart-Miflor, September 2006 edition. The elegant plum-purple mature leaves of Albizia julibrissin ‘Summer Chocolate’ contrast with the bright green young leaves and growing tips. The variety produces pink flowers and needs protection during cold periods. In Mediterranean gardens it could find the same important role of providing colour contrast similar to the success of the dark leaved Sambucus nigra ‘Black Beauty’ and ‘Black Lace’ in cooler climates. The new protected Albizia variety bred by Masato Yokoi, Japan, will be available from André Briant Jeunes Plants, France, starting in September 2007. E-mail: bretault@andre-briant.fr
