Mosquito deterrent

Ambrogio Vivai presented a new clone of Catalpa bungei that produces a volatile chemical called catalpolo in quantities 4 times that of the ordinary species. This substance strongly repels mosquitoes and is recommended for planting in patio containers or in gardens and even urban streets, as a container plant, bush or tree. The nursery supplies plants; bare root, container grown or grafted half and full standards. The name given to this variety is ‘Catamba’, protected by trademark Ambrös Plants® and a EU patent is pending. The variety is fast growing in all soils and situations but one has to pose the question “how many plants per mq will provide a significant deterrent effect?” Catalpa produces long panicles of flowers in early summer giving rise to long pod fruits.
