Some novelties from Benary 2007/2008

Benary novelties can be seen at their European trials in 2007 at Hann (Muenden), Germany, 27 April to 4 May and at Maasdijk, The Netherlands, 13-15 June. Many new or improved colours have been added to existing series.

In the F1 Begonia tuberhybrida series ‘Illumination®’ a scarlet flowering variety joins the 5 other colours (Salmon-pink, Orange, White, Apricot and Rose). These large flowering cascading begonias are idea for hanging baskets, window boxes and patio containers. For the grower, they can be produced at fairly high densities because the plants stay compact. For the retailer, the flowering plants in pots or hanging baskets have great impact. In containers, the plants grow into a globe shape with cascading shoots up to 80cm long carring many large flowers at each leaf node. From the plug stage to finished plant needs about 8-10 weeks, from seed 18-20 weeks.

In the well-known NonStop® F1 series of F1 hybrid Begonia tuberhybrida, ‘Deep Salmon’ and ‘Bright Rose’ are new additions whereas ‘Pink’ and ‘Yellow’ have been improved. Even these can be successfully planted in hanging baskers due to their well-branches, mounded habit. In the ‘Mocca’ series with bronze coloured foliage, ‘Pink Shades’ is a new addition.

Delphinium ‘Summer Morning’ is a new addition to the ‘Summer Colour series. It represents the first pink flowering variety of Delphinium garndiflorum. It produces delicate light pink flowers and lacy green leaves. It looks good in pots and patio containers and in bedding displays. Plants remain compact (20-30cm) with strong basal branching. It joins the other colours: white (‘Summer Stars’), deep blue (‘Summer Nights’) and light blue (‘Summer Blues’). Plugs can be grown to completion in 6 weeks whereas 16-20 weeks are needed from seed to flowering plants.

The well-known Cats® series of Viola is worth a mention because Cats® Light Blue is a very attractive new addition to the series. Flowers of this series are unique with their strong and distinct veining.

Salvia farinacea ‘Fairy Queen’ is the winner of a Fleuroselect Gold Medal. A small white spot on the blue flowers makes the flower colour quite distinct. It is well branched and grows to 45cm. Plants flower from the spring through to the first frost.. Flowering plants from plugs will take about 8-9 weeks or 20-22 weeks (spring) from seed and 12-16 weeks in the summer.
