‘Happy Colors’ – Jazzy flowers! | |
Happy Colors is the name given to a unique dyeing process for cut-flowers invented by Peter van de Werken of River Flowers® in the Netherlands. The process allows carefully controlled build up of natural pigments applied to the cut-stems to give multi-colours and shades to flower petals. Varieties with light coloured petals are presumably preferred for use in the process; rose variety ‘Vendella’ has been used a lot. The secret process might involve the injection of dyes into the stems while they are still growing. In some way or other, uptake differentials for each successive dye are created, or by virtue of the dyes themselves or by applying various dyes differentially to different parts of the vascular tissue. As the different dyes reach the flower petals they mix together to give a nice play of colours including different tonalities, mainly yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, green. The mix of pigments can be varied according to design. At all events it is an expensive process if to justify retail prices of about €9/stem (maybe €3-4/stem at wholesale). Roses dyed in this way are called ‘Rainbow Roses’ – an excellent marketing name. To date, only roses and chrysanthemums have been successfully marketed under ‘Happy Colours’ brand but the dyeing process can be applied to many other flowers e.g. Gerbera, Hydrangea, Oriental Lilies, Trachelium, Celosia, and calla lilies. Retailers and consumers might love or hate this development, but ‘Happy Colours’ are here to stay, even dyed according to consumer or Company promotions.
