Reafforestation in China

Huge areas in China have been planted with forest trees in the interests of reclamation and to help contrast pollution and periodic sand-storms hitting Beijing and Tianjin.

According to the the State Forestry Administration, no less than 5.23 million hectares of trees were planted in China during 2006 (State and voluntary schemes). This brings the total extention of forestry cover in China to 175 million hectares, representing 18.2% of the total territory.

In the urban areas, including public parks, gardens, road-side plantings etc, forestry cover increases to 32.5% of the total. This represents a per-capita quantity of greenery of 7.9/mq in most of the urban areas. The objectives of central planning is to arrive at a forestry cover of 20% of the total territory by 2010 and 30% in at least in 70% of the cities and megalopoli.

A wide cordon of trees is being planted North of Beijing to reduce the effect of sand-storms and the encroaching desert and to improve the city’s environment; 375.000 ha were planted there in the Beijing area in 2006.

It is hoped that air pollution will fall for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Some restrictions to the circulation of cars and other vehicles is likely over the period due to serious air pollution. The large Beijing Shougang Group is set to will have transferred its highly polluting steel production while other smaller factories will operate at a minimum level during the Games.

The ‘difficult’ climate of Bejing in July both for participating athletes and for flowering plants has resulted in the postponing the Olympic games to August. The official opening will now take place at 8p.m. on the 8th of August (the 8th month of the year) in 2008. Lucky number ‘8’ four times! The event will represent a collosal and spectacular presentation of modern day China to the world at large www.flowerweb.com www.enbeijing2008.com
