Garden design: a step back in time

A fascinating on-line glimpse of garden design in the 1700’s can be seen in the volume “New Principles of Gardening” by Batty Langley (1696-1751). The book was published in 1728 by A. Bettesworth and J. Batley, London, 1728. Today, these garden designs and descriptions in English can be seen on-line in the collection of rare books held at the University of Rochester, New York. The book covers the laying out and planting of parterres, groves, wilderness, labyrinths, avenues, parks etc., as conceived in the early 1700’s. The book is profusely illustrated with engravings. The texts describes how the principles of geometry apply to garden design. It also covers planting and maintenance of fruit trees and ornamental trees and shrubs.
