Flower Carpet® Scarlet | |
The latest introduction by Anthony Tesselaar Plants of Melbourne, Australia, is a scarlet flowering variety in the ground-cover rose series Flower Carpet®. It will be first released in the USA in the spring 2007. While Flower Carpet® Scarlet joins the 6 other varieties in the series (gold, pink, white, appleblossom, red and coral), Flower Carpet® Scarlet represents the first variety of a new generation of ground-cover roses, the result of 15 years of further breeding of the genetic material that yielded the original Flower Carpet series. In the 2006 ADR (All Deutschland Rose) trials, Flower Carpet® Scarlet won the highest marks of any variety tested in the 2006 ADR trials for resistance to foliar diseases, especially black spot and mildew. It also scored very highly for winter hardiness and flower performance. Plants are equally at home in full sunlight as they are in conditions of partial shade (4-5 hours of sun per day) with only a slight reduction in flowering. The ADR award comes at the end of 3 years of trials conducted in 11 different trial gardens where no chemical treatment is permitted. Antony Tesselaar operates other trial sites for new varieties in Australia, USA, France, Ireland, Mexico, the Netherlands and New Zealand. Flower Carpet® Scarlet shares many positive characteristics with the other varieties in the series. Plants grow into low compact bushes about 60/80cm tall with a spread of about 1m. Foliage is dark glossy green and the scarlet-red double flowers are produced in clusters of 6-8 blooms. Plants flower in flushes from the spring through to the autumn. The variety is cold tolerant but also thrives in high temperatures. Plants need to be well-watered, although they will withstand dry conditions once established. They grow in a wide range of soil types and are salt tolerant in the case of seaside planting. Plants are spaced at about 2-3 per mq for ground cover or 60 to 90cm apart to establish borders. They can be planted anytime during spring, summer or autumn. Buses are self-cleaning; no dead-heading is needed though they can be usefully trimmed to shape at anytime. Taking all these vegetative and flowering characteristcs together Flower Carpet® Scarlet is a remarkably strong, floriferous and resistant ground-cover rose. It won a silver award at Euroflora 2006. The variety is sold in Europe under the synonym Sorrento® and is available from the Italian licensee Antologia S.S. di Adelio e Fabrizio Gaviraghi, Fax 039 6081093, E-mail: info@antologia.com, www.antologia.com.
