New Ligularia varieties | |
The interesting new ‘Osiris’ range of Ligularia varieties bred by Serge Fafard of Les Jardins Osiris in Quebec, Canada, will slowly see the light of day. Fafard is a professional plant breeder known for his work with perennials such as Hosta, Hemerocallis and Paeonia. The new series i san important addition to the classic Ligularia dentata varieties such as ‘Brit-Marie Crawford’ and ‘Othello’. The ‘Osiris’ range is the result of many years of breeding and selection for new caharcateristics of the foliage; colour, shape and patterning. Ligularia fulfills a role in the garden similar to that of Heucheria, an ideal plant for shady locations in the garden and containers.
The first of the new series to be introduced is ‘Osiris Fantaisie’. It produces laced foliage of a begundy colour. Sister varieties ‘Osiris Pure Fantasie’ and ‘Osiris Café Noir’ will be introduced in 2009. The former produces green foliage with cream variagation. Newly emerging leaves in the latter variety are almost black, turning to bronze and olive green. These wil be followed later by ‘Osiris Cameleon’ which produces more rounded leaves in a fantasy of colour; cream, yellow and pink. ‘Osiris Evolution’ has pink coloured leaves that change to bright green and ‘Osiris Pistache’, has marbled leaves. Fafard is also looking to introduce new colours to the daisy-like flowers which are normally a yellow to dull ornage. Some ornamental selections arise from other species including: L. clivorum, L. przewalskii, L. hessei, L. fisherii, L. stenocephala and in particolar from L. japonica. The species L. palmatiloba has a very attractive light green palmate leaf. Graham Rice www.rhs.org.uk www.lesjardinsosiris.com Check the cnb for availability in Europe www.cnb.nl |
