Making the best use of water with TerraLenx

Lenzi Tecnologie Srl, Italy, have introduced a new, advanced textile with which to cover the surface of pots used in the outdoor cultivation of plants.  The material has been developed by Gruppo Lenzi Egisto in collaboration with the University of Florence and has undergone trials at the Experimental Station Ce.Spe.Vi,  Pistoia. This covering textile called TerraLenx,  is porous with a high absorption capacity for water and acts as a water reserve slowly releasing the moisture to the substrate below. The performance of the material is largely due to the very large number of tiny perforations (around 1500/cm2). Up to 50% saving in irrigation water is claimed through the reduction in evaporation from the surface of the substrate. It is also porous to air, provides a thermal buffer, reducing the peaks and troughs of temperature to the root systems throughout the year and it suppresses the germination and growth of weeds. This product should provide valuable savings in terms of costs and maintenance, for nurserystock growers.

Two types of TerraLenx (Basic and Plus) are made from artificial fibres that are not totally biodegrabable and for this reason last longer. Another two types (Bio and Bio Plus) are made from natural fibres that resist fungal and bacterial attack but which are later totally biodegradable in the soil. The material is available in a roll or as pre-cut discs. The pre-cut discs are available in sizes (diametre) from 16 to 40cm. In the case of Bio and Bio Plus the size extends to a diametre of 45cm.  “Lineaverde”.
