FloraHollands New products more and more consumer-oriented

FLORAHOLLAND, 27 May 2010 (press release) Last week the winners of De Glazen Tulp 2010 (2010 Glass Tulip) were announced in Rijnsburg. Each year, FloraHolland presents this award to the most promising new product in the categories cut flowers, indoor plants, outdoor plants and sales concepts. The four Glazen Tulp awards were presented during a festive get-together, where TV-host and jury chairman Rob Verlinden had the honor of announcing the winners.

Every year, hundreds of new products and concepts are introduced at FloraHolland. This is done via auction clock sales but also goes through FloraHolland Connect. Historically, product innovation has always been important to the Dutch floricultural industry. Growers distinguish themselves to their customers by presenting new products. And new products give traders a chance to surprise their customers with something innovative. Jury chairman Rob Verlinden explained that nowadays, new products are becoming more and more aimed at consumers. Growers are less prone to focus solely on the product; they now have the consumer in mind. This year, the winning products are:

Category outdoor plants
1st prize: Taste of Nature - Jac. v.d. Hoeven Boomkwekerij
2nd prize: Campanula SWEET MEE ® - Fairytale Flowers
3rd prize: Phylliopsis hillieri Sprite – Kortenhorst Boomkwekerij

The jury commented on the winner by saying that this product, Taste of Nature, was a miniature experience of nature. Taste of Nature is completely in line with the trend for edible gardens. Thanks to their size, these little trees will fit on every terrace or balcony.

Category indoor plants
1st prize: Blad-Vriesea Mix - Stofbergen Plant Company
2nd prize: Kalanchoë more flowers Paris - Queen
3rd prize: Alocasia Black Magic - Kwekerij J. de Groot

According to the jury, the Blad-Vriesea Mix is an authentic plant with a tremendous ornamental value that will never cease to fascinate. The plant has a lovely silhouette, it is compact and the mix is diverse.

Category concepts
1st prize: Wallflower - Wallflower
2nd prize: Puur Aroma - Vaste Plantenkwekerij Radder
3rd prize: Phalaenopsis Mirror Miracle - Opti-flor BV

The jury described the winner Wallflower as beautifully styled and easy to use. Therefore, Wallflower will appeal to a new target group that never used to be interested in indoor plants.

Category cut flowers
1st prize: Large-flowered Rosa Deep Water - Zuurbier & Co, Sjaak van der Hulst and Rosen Tantau
2nd prize: Paeonia lactiflora White Pool - Kwekerij Besseling
3rd prize: Hydrangea Papillon - Hydraflower

The jury was very taken with the subtle color progression (dégradé) and the light scent that this large-flowered Rose ‘Deep Water’ has to offer. Jury member Aty Luitze called it a ‘true love rose’; one you would not want to get from your neighbor but that you would love to receive from your husband.
