The new insecticide Vi-Nil has been recently launched by Certis. The active ingredient Fipronil has demonstrated a 100% control of vine weevil grubs over two seasons, compared to 95% control with a competing product Suscon Green (active ingredient Chlorpyrifos). When mixed with growing media, Vi-Nil binds onto plant roots with a semi-systemic action. Vine weevil larvae die after direct contact with the granules or after eating the roots. This highly active substance has low toxicity for mammals and can be used at a low rate of application and is therefore environmentally acceptable. Wine weevil damage is estimated to cost over Euro 20 million in damage to UK growers alone. "Horticulture Week". www.hortiweek.com
