This new predator insect, Atheta coriaria (Staphylinidae) developed by Syngenta Bioline promises good control against larvae of Scatella spp., Sciarid fly and soil dwelling stages of thrips. Originally developed at the Vineland Research Station, Ontario, Canada. The predator is a ground dwelling beetle about 3mm long. All mobile stages are predatory. They tolerate a wide range of soil conditions and growing media, including wet areas. Adults and larval stages avoid light and burrow rapidly into the growing medium. The product is being supplied in a trial pack of 500 beetles of mixed ages in a carrier material for easy distribution into the crop and will rapidly colonize a greenhouse.
