Ten new varieties for 2003 are listed as winners of the AAS (All-America Selections trials). Petunia F1 ‘Blue Wave’ from Kirin and Rudbeckia hirta ‘Prarie Sun’ from Benary are already familiar from other trials and awards. Vinca ‘Jaio’ Dark Red, follows the pink variety introduced last year (also an AAS winner). Flowers are deep red with a white eye and flowering is early. Plants demonstrate a compact branching habit and are tolerant to heat and low moisture. Bred by Dai-Ichi Seed Co. Vinca is the ‘Plant of the Year’ for 2002 regards the US National Garden Bureau: www.ngb.org F1 ornamental Millet ‘Purple Majesty’ grows to 1-1.5m tall with wide purple leaf blades and flower spikes that mature to reddish-purple seed spikes. An interesting plant for creating colour contrast . High light levels induce a strong purple coloration and provide for the fastest growth. Saleable plants from seed in 8-14 weeks. Bred by Dr. David Andrews, University of Nebraska. Pan American won an award with Eustoma F1 ‘Forever White’ claimed to be the first white flowering Eustoma that thrives in a sunny garden. Plants have a dwarf compact habit to 30cm and flower from the spring through to autumn. Because of his habit, fewer plants are needed to fill out a pot. Good as a companion plant in containers and beds. Agastache foeniculum ‘Golden Jubilee’ from K.Sahin BV, produces golden foliage that gently darkens to lime-green on the older lower leaves. It is a heat loving plant that grows well in full sun or partial shade, producing lavender flower spikes during the summer. Mature plants grow to 60cm. Gaillardia ‘Sundance Bicolour’ produces double flowers with an unusual colour combination of mahogany red and yellow. It is heat and drought tolerant and needs no pinching or staking. Flowers throughout the season requiring little or no maintenance. Easy to grow from seed . It is ideal in mass bedding arrangements or growing in containers. Bred by Hem Zaden BV. Sakata Seeds won an award with F1 multiflora Petunia ‘Merlin Blue Morn’ which has unique bicoloured flower. Mature plants grow to a height of 35-50cm and spread of 45 — 70cm and are good for pot and bedding use. F1 Dianthus ‘Corona Cherry Magic’ won an award for Pan American seeds for its exceptional performance in the greenhouse and garden. Flowers are bicoloured. F1 Dianthus ‘Can Can’ Scarlet bred by Sakata Seed Co., produces strongly fragrant double red flowers. It is a very versatile variety suitable for pot cultivation, bedding or as a cut-flower.
