In 1994, employees of Siskiyou Rare Plant
Nursery in Oregon, USA, spotted a pink flowering sport on a white-flowering
seedling of Gaura lindheimeri. This mutation, named Siskiyou Pink
became very popular, especially on the West Coast. Gaura lindheimeri
Crimson Butterflies is a recent offspring of Siskiyou Pink.
Developed by Mr. Howard Bently of Plant Growers Australia, of Victoria, Australia.
This New Cultivar is very compact, with very dark crimson foliage. The hot pink
flowers are held upright by short red stems slightly above the foliage. It is
a heat and drought tolerant perennial (though looks its best when regularly
watered) with 1.5cm, four- petaled flowers that appear in clumps on the tips
of red upright stems. It is adaptable to almost any soil and is also tolerant
of high humidity. It flowers from early spring to the first frost, but flowering
is most abundant in late spring. Plants grow to about 45cm tall and 60cm wide
and are valuable perennial plants in borders and naturalized areas. The attractive
flowering stems could have an interesting use in flower arrangements. Hardy
down to zones 5-10 (USDA). Native to Texas, Louisiana and Mexico. Propagation
by cuttings or root division. www.prideofplaceplants.com
