Height control of Perennials

The production of shorter well-branched plants is perceived as an important quality characteristic by the consumer and is advantageous for transport and sales. A special supplement written by Paul Pilon and published in English for the "GrowerTalks" magazine, is a valuable source of information. It includes a chart that shows the sensitivity of 150 species and varieties of Perennials to11 different plant growth regulators (applied singly or in combination) plus indicative dose rates in ppm. The plant growth regulators include: A-Rest, B-Nine, Bonsi, Cycocel, Florel, Sumagic, B-Nine+Sumagic, B-Nine+Cycocel, A-Rest+B-Nine, B-Nine+Bonzi, A-Rest+Sumagic. Under normal growing conditions, 2 or 3 applications of growth regulators will reduce height by 15-30%, an effect that will last for about 2-4 weeks before the plants resume normal growth. The Supplement describes the best ways to use plant growth regulators and some keys to success such as: determining the best rate of application (variable according to climate and growing conditions); frequency of application; volume of spray; uniform coverage and timing (greatest effect on young actively growing plant tissue).
