Growers, especially those already cultivating pot Clivia, would do well to take a look at the new Chesapeake series of Ornithogalum hybrids bred by Robert J. Griesbach of the United States National Arboretum and the late Fred Meyer of New World Plants Inc. These new interspecific hybrids combine the dense floral display and large flowers of Ornithogalum thyrsoides, the compact habit of O. multifolium and the intense orange flowers and short stature of O. dubium. After intensive crossbreeding, three new varieties were selected: Chesapeake Blaze (bright orange flowers), Chesapeake Sunburst (bright orange flowers) and Chesapeake Sunset (bright yellow flowers). Plants grow to a height of 25-30cm from a summer dormant deciduous bulb. The dark green glabrous leaves are 2.5-5cm wide and 15-20cm long. Bulbs produce 2-3 short and thick flower stems in succession and each flower stem blooms for 3-4 weeks. Plants remain in flower for several months. Bulbs should be grown in a well-drained potting mix or sandy loam, pH of 6-7. Plants grow and flower continuously at temperatures under 90°F (65-75°F is ideal. The Chesapeake series is ideal as an indoor plant and can also be used in bedding schemes in USDA Zone 9.
