Flower-bulb production in Great Britain

Almost 4,400 tonnes of bulbs, worth about Euro 3.9 million will be exported to Holland in 2002. It is a little known fact that the UK is one of the world's leading growers and exporters of daffodils and other bulb flowers, annually growing around 4.000 ha of outdoor bulbs and flowers, valued at Euro 39.4 million in 2001. Last year, more than 9,800 tonnes of bulbs were exported to more than a dozen countries around the world with the largest customers being Holland, the United States and Germany. British grown bulbs are grown to high quality standards and are known for produce an above average number of flowers. One advantage, according to the National farmers' Union (NFU) is that UK farms grow a wide range of varieties in large quantities so that one grower can easily supply a single large order. This makes the quality of the bulbs highly consistent. www.nfu.org.uk
