Integrated pest control in the cultivation of Ruscus and Genista

271) Integrated pest control in the cultivation of Ruscus and Genista

In the case of Ruscus, good control of the larvae of Otiorrhynchus sulcatus (and other close relatives) was obtained through the application in autumn and spring of namatodes of the genus Heterorhabitis, in particular the species H. megidis. Against the adults good control was obtained using Derris (a natural insecticide based on rotenone), every 10-15 days. In serious outbreaks in the critical period May-July, applications were made every week. Even better results were obtained using a mixture of Derris and natural Pyrethrum. Adult Otiorrhynchus cause very bad damage to the cladodi (branches with the function of leaves) while the larvae damage the roots. Control of red spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) was obtained through the frequent introduction of the predator Phytoseiulus persimilis.

With regard to Genista, the most serious damage is done to the flowers. The insects involved are: thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) and Thrips simplex, some Psididi and Lepidoptera larvae (mostly Uresiphita limbalis). The thrips were reasonably well controlled by Orius laevigatus and the parasitic fungus Beauveria bassiana adding ultra fine oil on application). For the larvae of U. limbalis treatment with Bacillus thuringiensis proved effective. Carlo Pasini. Istituto Sperimentale per la Floricoltura di Sanramo, Italy.
