Fragrant Calla Lilies

The first fragrant Calla lily has been released by a breeder in Swaziland by crossing Zantedeschia aethipica with Z. odorata. Calla is widely grown as a cut flower and these new varieties with several different scents and leaves varying from dark to light green, are likely to increase consumer interest in this flowers (some varieties of which might also suitable for production as a pot plant). One of the new crosses has a white flower with a scent reminiscent of a lightly perfumed freesia and is similar in habit to Z. aethiopica but the leaves have wavy margins and prominent veining. The new varieties are currently being micro-propagated in India and it will take some time before for commercial quantities become available.
