Forcing Azaleas with supplementary light

Work at the Sachsische Landesanstalt fur Landwirtschaft in Dresden-Pillnitz, Germany, has looked at the influence of different forcing temperatures in combination with assimilation light of different intensity on the cultivation period and plant quality. Heating temperatures (from 16°C on) plus supplementary light (3klx) can be profitable in terms of the shortening of the cultivation period. At a temperature of 20°C and 6klx of supplementary light, the cultivation period can be shortened by 50%-75%, depending on variety, stage of maturity and date of forcing, as compared to a control temperature of 12°C without light. The additional light also improved the quality; flowers were larger with more intense colour and they opened more uniformly.
