Cyclamen persicum varieties 'Miracle White' and 'Miracle Salmon' were grown at a temperature of 8, 12, 16, 20 or 24°C for 8 weeks following visible bud (2mm of flower bud). The temperature regime after flower initiation affects morphology and flowering. From the results the fastest flowering is predicted after 161 days at 20.5°C for 'Miracle Salmon' and after 170 days at 19.2°C for 'Miracle White'. Before and after this 8 week growing period the temperature was maintained at 16°C. The total plant leaf area was largest in warmest conditions with a marked increase in individual leaf size at 24°C. At first open flower, Miracle Salmon' had 47 flower buds at 16, 20 or 24°C and Miracle White had 44 flower buds at 20°C and 41 at 24°C. The flower petal length decreased slightly at 24°C in both varieties compared to other temperatures. Karlsson M.G. and Werner J.W. Scientia Horticulturae www.elsevier.nl |
